Monday 11/5 Homework

Make an interesting portrait.

Some of your peers convinced me that your drawings should only be 18 x 24 so that you can have more time to work on your thumbnails. I agreed, but that means that both better be awesome.

Self Portrait in Pieces

Taking different points of view using various scales and cropping of your face and body you will create a self
portrait from observation in a mirror or reflective surface. You will use at least 11 surfaces of varying sizes.
The final drawing produced should be at least 4x7 feet.

Consider use of scale

Consider use of various cropping

Consider what parts of the face call more attention. Do they need to be smaller? Larger?

The pieces should not be attached and the spaces Inbetween each piece should be highly considered in terms
of overall composition and design. I do expect negative space in between the sheets to be used as a
compositional tool. These pieces will be laid out on the wall and need to make sense as a whole work.

The work will be an interesting, dynamic, well balanced piece.

Will you use symmetry?

Will you use asymmetry?

What does this say about your self portrait?

Consider both how the the individual parts will look and how they will work as a whole.

Everything that we have gone over in class thus far will be considered.

You may make mixed media drawings using pencil, charcoal, ink, gesso.

This will take some degree of thinking, planning, and experimentation. Start now.

You will be paired with a member of the class and you will present a written critique of your partners
progress due November 19. You will need to have thumbnails and mock ups prepared experimenting with materials,
layout/ composition, and relationships of images. This means you need to have started the project and thought
it through by this point.

Due: December 3

Final

Movie still, Master copy, and You

For the final piece you will put together an image consisting of at least one movie still, and a work from a master artist layered with your own work and content.

Using these sources you are to create an investtigate narrative and it’s potentials.

This piece should be have a 16:9 ratio the smallest possibility (for you) of which is 3.5 x 6 ft.

You may use any materials you wish in any combination that makes sense.

Artists to look at:

Gregory Crewdson
Luc Tuymans
Douglas Gordon’s “24 hour Psycho”
Christian Marclay “The Clock”
Eve Sussman
Andy Warhol
Roy Lichtenstein
James Rosenquist

3/21

Read the article in the content section on blackboard on Christian Marclay and his process. Write a page response that ends with brainstorming for your final piece.  Also attach brainstorming sketches.

Signature II Clarification

Some are confused about signature number II. You are to take your master copies and make your own work inspired by and referencing the images you so diligently studied, also use a neutral palette. So if you have been doing Picasso studies you can start by making cubist drawings of your roommate using cool blue grays. Frame your ideas with your artist's ideas.

Monday, monday, MONDAY!

Art in a box...

Bring me your drawings, make me weep.
