Self Portrait in Pieces

Taking different points of view using various scales and cropping of your face and body you will create a self
portrait from observation in a mirror or reflective surface. You will use at least 11 surfaces of varying sizes.
The final drawing produced should be at least 4x7 feet.

Consider use of scale

Consider use of various cropping

Consider what parts of the face call more attention. Do they need to be smaller? Larger?

The pieces should not be attached and the spaces Inbetween each piece should be highly considered in terms
of overall composition and design. I do expect negative space in between the sheets to be used as a
compositional tool. These pieces will be laid out on the wall and need to make sense as a whole work.

The work will be an interesting, dynamic, well balanced piece.

Will you use symmetry?

Will you use asymmetry?

What does this say about your self portrait?

Consider both how the the individual parts will look and how they will work as a whole.

Everything that we have gone over in class thus far will be considered.

You may make mixed media drawings using pencil, charcoal, ink, gesso.

This will take some degree of thinking, planning, and experimentation. Start now.

You will be paired with a member of the class and you will present a written critique of your partners
progress due November 19. You will need to have thumbnails and mock ups prepared experimenting with materials,
layout/ composition, and relationships of images. This means you need to have started the project and thought
it through by this point.

Due: December 3
