Hmwrk #4

Mark is the essence of drawing. The primal language used in mark making can be wielded in different ways. It can be a bridge connecting the basic emotions of an artist to a viewer through a shared sense of movement or many movements. Body language and gesture are as strong a part of culture and communication as verbal language. Mark is this communication recorded. Imagine walking up to a stranger and slowly sticking up your middle finger. Now imagine doing it to a friend with a goofy smile on your face. Mark visually excites and connects with the viewer and describes many possible emotions or states of being.

It can communicate a journey, a narrative, the passage of time, a poetic moment, or an epic battle. What does a mark describing a moment of grief look like as opposed to one of anger, a state of arousal? What is a humorous mark? A serious one? What does the mark of a lyrical dance look like or one that describes your journey through college so far?

Create a single, large 4 to 5 foot mark using ink or wet media and an alternative tool such as a broom, a rag, or even your hand. NO BRUSHES! This mark should describes an emotional or narrative journey.

Really consider your one act of mark making here. Consider the scale, surface, thickness, line weight and quality. Make it engaging and interesting.

Below are artists that you should research before making your mark.

Cy Twombly
Jackson Pollock
Brice Marden
Martin Pureyor
Lee Krasner
Joan Mitchell
Helen Frankenthaller
Robert Mangold
Doris Salcedo “Shibboleth”
Rebecca Warren
Janine Antoni “Brush”
Yves Klien
Jean Miro
Sean Scully
Paul Klee
Barnett Newman
Franz West
Mark Bradford

Hmwrk #2

Bring detailed brainstorming sketches and drawings that investigate your ideas for your first project.

Homework #1

Complete the drawing started in class from memory. Make sure that you are thinking about what was discussed in class. Not only should measurements and proportions be as close as you can get them based on your notes but things should also make spatial and perspectival sense. Things that are stacked should look stacked. Ellipses should open as they move down in point of view. Use pressure variation to create the illusion of space as well.

Homework for Wednesday

Take 9 photos to be brought to the next class. 3 of 1, 3 of 2, and 3 of 3 point perspective. Each of the 3 should vary the eye or horizon line in the image. 1 high, 1 from your POV, and 1 from the knee to ankle region. After you have taken the photos print and trace over the more obvious perspective lines as well as the eye line in the image.

Homework #3

Create an at least 18 x 24 drawing where the negative space is as important as the positive space.

Piet Mondrian's earlier work would be a good place to look if you need help thinking about this.

Homework #2

Draw 5 separate translations of your hand.

What are five different ways that you can represent the same thing?

Can you translate an idea visually using 5 different visual languages? Is this merely a change of POV? Do you make stylistic changes? Content? Mark? Composition? Material? Are these separate translations or just drawn differently? At what point is this a different translation? When does the representation become a new language? A new vehicle of communication? When does that image stop being the thing you wish to represent? How can you look at the hand in different ways? What does the hand mean to art and art making? Think of the different ways the hand makes itself seen in a work of art. Think about how the hand is present in mark, motion, gesture, and, time. How do you communicate through image and drawing?

Begin with thumbnails, sketches, and free association. These will be due 2/4.

These should be 5 separate drawings. They should each be at least 18 x 24.

These will be graded on process of development, conceptual elegance, and execution.

Homework #1

On the sheet of paper from class in which you drew and then erased the in class still life study redraw the still life from memory and the notes taken. Grades will be based on your ability to make spatial sense of the drawing. Focus on the subtle perspective changes that take place and changes in ellipses as they move away from the eye line. Use varied pressure to create the illusion of space. Also, make sure you are creating interesting compositions and considering the entire sheet of paper.
